Denison University

A university located on a hill makes for beautiful views of the town below.  It is at Denison University where time honored traditions like buzzard watching in the skies above, searching for ghosts in the library, enjoying a frozen custard at Whit’s and devouring a Snagel (a bagel, toasted and topped with cream cheese and a sprinkle of brown sugar) at the Bandersnatch that, coupled with outstanding academic excellent, make Denison a great place to be.

The Career Services office at Denison has a time honored and student valued program of its own: Now in its 22nd year, the Denison Internship Program (formerly called “May Term”) provides students with the opportunity to explore career fields of interest and apply their academic coursework to the world of work. Every December Career Exploration & Development publishes an internship catalog that outlines the internship program, lists “Denison Exclusive” & national internship opportunities and contains sample resumes and cover letters. Students are also welcome to arrange/design internships on their own.

What a great day in Granville, Ohio! Hope to visit again soon.

Visiting Ohio’s University of Akron

Mostly a commuter school, located in downtown Akron, Ohio, the urban campus of the University of Akron (UA) is not short of school spirit.  What we were really impressed with the most on campus was the dedication to students from faculty and staff.  We heard countless stories of campus leadership going above and beyond to assist the over 29,000 students on campus.

With over 300 majors and 200 student programs and a game room in the Student Union that raises the bar for on campus fun, students are well positioned to excel and have fun while doing so.  We couldn’t help but enjoy ourselves on a campus complete with a lazy river in the Wellness Center and Kangaroo as a mascot!

Thank you for having us, University of Akron!

East Tennessee State University (ETSU)

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) celebrated their 100th anniversary in the Fall of 2010 and the campus was still showing its’ pride in the accomplishment during our visit.  Although our visit to campus was brief, we did learn that ETSU has very unique attributes, including:

The Quillen College of Medicine, consistently ranked as one of the top schools nationwide for rural medicine and primary care education

Unique programs include a nationally acclaimed and accredited program in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music, the nation’s lone master’s degree in Storytelling, and the Appalachian Studies programs, focused on the surrounding Appalachian region.

Recording star Kenny Chesney, four-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, holds a degree in advertising from ETSU.

We learned a lot and had a great time. Go Buccaneers!

University of Tennessee (UT)

EHS received a warm greeting from the entire University of Tennessee (UT) Career Services staff during our visit on campus.  It was a great way to start the day and be welcomed to Knoxville.  During our visit (driving and walking down the many roads named after famous alumni, i.e. Pat Summitt and Todd Helton to name a couple) we learned of exciting programs like:

RecycleMania: RecycleMania is a friendly eight-week competition between universities across the country to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.

UT Farmers Market: UT is currently hosting a weekly Farmers Market that will continue through October.

The Mug Project and reusable to-go boxes are working to eliminate single-use cups and containers from campus dining facilities, and all food waste is composted and reused for campus landscaping.

Canoe and Hiking Club: A member-driven sports club, composed of diverse, open-minded individuals who share a common interest: the outdoors!

International House: The International House is a popular gathering place for visiting international students and delegations and University of Tennessee students who have previously or are currently interested in studying abroad through the Programs Abroad Office. A full kitchen, meeting rooms, and a library provide support for frequent cultural events ranging from salsa dance lessons and nation-themed culture nights to Peace Corps interest meetings.

As you can tell, it sure is great to be a student at the University of Tennessee. We look forward to welcoming some of these forward-thinking students & interns to live with us this summer in NYC.

Go Vols!

St. Francis Named Top Regional College in the North by U.S. News & World Report

EHS partner St. Francis College, located in Brooklyn Heights, NY, was again selected by U.S. News & World Report for its list of Best Regional Colleges in the North, moving the College six slots higher than on the previous list. St. Francis was also ranked the 4th Most Diverse Regional College in the North.

“We are always trying to improve the college experience for our students, from the introduction of new programs like American Studies to the just completed renovation of an Organic Chemistry lab,” said President Brendan J. Dugan ’68. “Everything we do here has two purposes; to give our students a competitive advantage in the workplace and to help them develop into a contributing member of the community.”

“Being listed as one of the most diverse Colleges supports one of the most important parts of our mission here,” said Executive Vice President June McGrisken. “Through the years, the changing makeup of New York City’s cultures and ethnicities has always been reflected in our population.  Exposing our students to that incredible diversity is the best way to prepare them for a world that continues to become more complex and more globally connected.”

The U.S. News rankings are based on a number of criteria including assessments from peer colleges, graduation and retention rates and alumni giving. In past years St. Francis has also been ranked as a top Comprehensive College and Baccalaureate College.

In August, Forbes.com ranked St. Francis College on its America’s Best Colleges list for the fourth year in a row.

Congrats from EHS!

Sewanee: The University of the South

Sewanee: The University of the South

Located in southern Tennessee, Sewanee: The University of the South  is in a quaint and comfortable campus. Some of the administrative buildings on campus resemble log cabins.  The Sewanee campus is all inclusive, a place where students, faculty and staff live, work and study together. Students on campus are EMTs, firemen, as well as hard working students.

The Career Services office on campus has contact with nearly each student on campus before graduation.    Considering there are 1,400 students on campus, that is an amazing job well done.

Alumni giving back in the form of internships is one of the ways in which students are driven to the Career Services office.  Over 100 internships are offered  to students each summer, all by Sewanee alumni! Way to pay it forward Sewanee alumni and keeping it in the (Sewanee) family!

P.S. If you are in the area and looking for a place for lunch, we recommend The Blue Chair!

Belmont University

Belmont University

Students at Nashville’s Belmont University experience NYC through the semester-long internship program, Belmont East.  Belmont students reside with EHS while they complete semester long-internships across the city.  The film, theater and television students work and play in the Big Apple each year through the university’s ongoing program with EHS.  This is just one of the many ways Belmont is making a push to have every student study off campus before graduation.  Belmont students also have exposure to other well-ranked programs.  Check out the list below:

Seven time Atlantic Sun Conference All Academic Trophy Winner
Belmont University

“One of the Best Music Business Programs in the Country”
Rolling Stone and Time Magazines

Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business

Princeton Review “Best Graduate Business Program” 2011
Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business

Laerdal Medical Corporation “Center of Educational Excellence”

Gordon E. Inman College of Health Sciences & Nursing

And we haven’t even talked about the mansion on campus.  That’s right, a mansion! Listed on the national register of historic landmarks, the 155-year-old Belmont Mansion is the architectural centerpiece of the university’s campus.

As you can tell, we had an amazing time and hope to make another visit to Belmont University soon!

Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University has several student and career enrichment programs to boast about, but there is one that has caught the eye of EHS.  That program is Vandy on Madison Avenue.  Each year, Vanderbilt students spend the summer in NYC interning with several fabulous organizations throughout the city.  Several of these students reside with EHS while completing their internships.  For more information on this program, visit  Vanderbilt’s Career Center office website.

Vanderbilt University also has many other leading programs, such as:

– Latin American Public Opinion Project
LAPOP has produced comprehensive surveys of public opinion for more than 30 years. Every two years it carries out the AmericasBarometer survey, which currently covers 26 nations in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Each year it publishes dozens of high quality academic studies and policy-relevant papers.

– Cal Turner Center for Moral Leadership

The Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Professions seeks to foster an environment conducive to faculty research and teaching in areas associated with moral leadership, and to develop student’s abilities to provide moral leadership within their chosen profession as well as within the broader community.

– National Center on Performance Incentives

NCPI examines whether financial incentives for teachers, administrators and schools affect the quality of teaching and learning. NCPI’s work includes the nationally recognized POINT study, the most academically rigorous study to date to examine this issue.

We were told that a visit to Vanderbilt’s campus is not complete without a stop at Grins, for all the healthy food you desire, so we capped our day of learning with a Greek salad and a Vegan cookie.

Baylor University: Go Bears!

Baylor University

Our visit to the Alamo Bowl champions’ campus, Baylor University, was enjoyable!  The sun was shining brightly and warmly on the day of our visit and it was easy to see why the Baylor campus was so lit up.

The 15,000 students seem to truly enjoy themselves on campus.  The warm weather had students in shorts, playing tennis, studying on the lawn and checking in on Joy and Lady, the live bear mascots in their on campus habitat. The Mascot could have been the Buffalo, Antelope, Frog, Ferret or Bookworm … After seventy years without an official mascot, students in 1914 voted to name the bear the official “Patron Saint of all Baylordom.”If that were not enough, Baylor University is also know for the following:

– Baylor University’s program for apparel merchandising, design and product development has been ranked among the country’s 20 best fashion schools by Fashionista, an influential blog which focuses on trends, events, companies and personalities in the fashion world.

– Entrepreneur Magazine and The Princeton Review rank Baylor’s Entrepreneurship Program as No. 3 in the country out of more than 2,000 institutions in its 2011 assessment.

– Baylor is the home of the first campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity

– Dr. Pepper Hour?  A special opportunity for fellowship … In 1953, the director of the Union Building, now the Bill Daniel Student Center, scheduled a special hour each week for students to enjoy a “frosted Dr Pepper” and “talk amongst themselves.”

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit as well as the gorgeous view at the campus! We hope to make another trip back soon.

Texas State University

Texas State University (TSU)

Texas State University is a beautiful, hilly campus in San Marcos.  The Career Services department has set the bar high when it comes to the services and professional development opportunities it provides.  Click here to check out what TSU students have in store for them this spring.

TSU is great in many other ways, too!…

At the Aquarena Center on the Texas State campus, you can see the second-largest springs in Texas through the floor of a glass-bottom boat. The Texas State Strutters dazzled audiences for the first time in 1960. Today, the Strutters are one of the university’s longest-running and proudest traditions. They hold the distinction of being the first dance team organized on any major university campus in Texas and have become known internationally for their showmanship and sharp performances.

Another important thing we learned was the Eat ‘Em Up, Cats Hand Sign. The sign is made by holding up your right hand in the shape of Bobcat paw while yelling “Eat ’em up, Cats!” (Try it!)

LBJ, 36th President of the United States is a TSU alum and the statue of him on campus reminds all who pass by of their potential for greatness.

Texas State is also renowned for its Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets, which has attracted filmmakers from all across the Americas to its annual documentary film festival, Puntos de Vista.

We clearly had a fantastic visit to Texas State University and learned a ton. We thank them for their hospitality, and hope to make it back for another visit soon!
