Roger Williams College

During our recent trip to beautiful Providence, Rhode Island, we stopped at Roger Williams College, which sits on 143 acres overlooking picturesque Mount Hope Bay in Rhode Island.

The campus is home to the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences as well as five professional schools. Regardless of their major, Roger Williams students graduate with a comprehensive foundation in the liberal arts. One of the professional schools is the Mario Gabelli School of Business. Mario Gabelli  is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Gabelli Asset Management Company Investors (GAMCO Investors) a global investment firm headquartered in Rye, New York.

We took in great info and great views… hope to be back for a visit soon!

EHS visits North Carolina

According to the North Carolina State University website, “As a major research university, NC State has the people —from undergraduate and graduate students to faculty — and the responsibility to advance knowledge, transfer technology, and discover and develop innovations that solve some of the world’s most pressing problems”. While visiting NCSU our favorite stop was The College of Textiles. The College of Textiles has two academic departments named Textile Apparel Technology and Management and Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science.

Most people think of textiles as fabric for clothing but at North Carolina State, textiles include but are not limited to:

High Performance Textile-Based Products: the world renowned Textile Protection and Comfort Center leads research in protective gear that camouflage in daylight as well as at night when viewed by night vision goggles; that protect against chemical and biological exposure, yet can be worn for days.

Transportation Products: Textiles are a key part of polymeric-based composites that may be used in your bicycle frame, car bodies, and airplane fuselages.

Medical Textiles: The College of Textiles at NC State produced the world’s first knitted artificial artery and it was implanted in someone’s chest to carry blood to the legs!

As stated by NCSU: With 300,000 square feet of research and teaching space we are able to partner with industry in 61 labs located within the college. Our facilities are capable of all manufacturing operations from producing nanofibers to making an end product. We are also the home of The Nonwovens Institute, the Textile Protection and Comfort Center, and the Institute of Textile Technology.

Elon University

EHS has been the home to many Elon students over the years, many in the field of Communications. The School of Communications at Elon requires all students to complete an internship before graduating. According to Elon’s website: Every communications school has an internship program, but Elon takes internships to the next level in three ways:

  1. All of our internships are in professional settings. We do not award internship credit for campus jobs.
  2. Our School of Communications has a full-time Internship Director available to help students every day.
  3. We are proactive in seeking good internship opportunities for students by making site visits to New York, Boston, Washington and other cities, and then keeping in contact with our students on the job.

UNC Chapel Hill

We have been to UNC several times but this was our first visit to the School of Law and the first time that we had a parking spot labeled for us when we arrived! We thank everyone at the law school for their incredible hospitality.

While there and learned that UNC Law students have several programs from which to gain practical experience before graduating.

The Externship Program: The Externship Program is designed to enhance traditional classroom instruction by engaging students in real-life lawyering experiences with practicing lawyers and judges in the community.

The Summer Program: The summer program offers 50 placements, both at judicial and non-judicial sites

The Semester in Practice Program: The Semester in Practice program offers full time, semester long externships with our partner government agencies and public interest organizations in Washington DC, New York City, Atlanta and North Carolina.
